This week while I was at the GBGM Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, we marked Make Malaria History day by worship. Make Malaria History is the new overall name for an initially Africa-focused effort to prevent and treat occurrences of the deadly disease borne by mosquitoes. Malaria affects 500 million people worldwide and kills a child, mostly in Africa, every 30 seconds. It can be prevented.
Your can be apart of Make Malaria History by giving a donation to “Nothing But Nets”.
“Nothing But Nets” is a grassroots campaign which partners include the United Methodist Church, the United Nations Foundation, Sports Illustrated, the National Basketball Association, Millennium Promise and the Measles Initiative, which helps prevent malaria by the use of hanging nets. The United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries and the United Methodist Communications are coordinating the church’s participation in the campaign, which will include a major initiative for youth groups.

The United Methodist Women met on Saturday July 15, 2006 for a general meeting and to make gift baskets for our local police and fire departments filled with cookies and other goodies. We enjoyed Sandra Newlin who shared with us about her life and a prison ministry that she is a part of. Thanks for sharing God’s goodness with us!
PG Readers meet on Tuesday July 18, 2006 to discuss Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. All who came enjoyed a lively discussion on this book. Some of the themes in this book were about acceptance of others, true love and compassion. All who read the book felt that the author made the characters come alive for the reader. Some expressed feeling a wide range of emotions while reading this book. We recommend this book to all who want to know more about God’s love for us. Thanks to Martha for recommending this book to us! Next month our group will meet to discuss the book Dispatches from the Edge: A Memoir of War, Disasters, and Survival by Anderson Cooper. Please feel free to come join us as we discuss this book and the effects of war and disasters on our world. PG readers meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 10:00 am in the KCLC parlor. Happy reading to all!
